The automotive industry has become a major driver of growth in magnesium alloy applications. The application range of magnesium alloys in automobiles is constantly expanding. Although the application of magnesium alloys has been nearly 70 years old, the application of magnesium alloys was small before the mid-1980s. The development of high-purity magnesium alloys has ended the embarrassing situation of magnesium alloy applications. For example, the magnesium alloy die castings used by the three major US automobile companies increased from five in 1983 to 30 in 1992 (Ford), 45 (universal), and 20 (Chrysler); by 1993, it has almost doubled. The three major companies used more than 60 magnesium alloy die-casting parts in production; mainly the clutch housing, steering column frame, brake pedal bracket, valve cover, valve Auto parts such as plates, gearboxes, and intake manifolds. In recent years, new developments have been made in magnesium alloy structural parts, such as seat frames and magnesium wheels. However, from the overall point of view, the current use of magnesium alloys in automobiles is still very small, the amount of each vehicle is between 0.5 and 17 kg, and the average usage is about 3 kg. According to the estimated amount and statistics of typical magnesium components in automobiles (see table), the weight of magnesium parts in each car can reach 50~80kg. It is predicted that by 2030, the number of cars owned by the world will reach 1 billion, and the annual output of automobiles will reach 70 million. The annual consumption of automobile magnesium will reach 350 to 5 million t/a. In the near term, by 2006, if every car uses an average of 10kg of magnesium, according to the current annual total automobile production of 60 million vehicles and 600 million vehicles, the annual consumption of magnesium can reach more than 1 million tons. . These are still based on the premise that there is not a large supply of low-priced magnesium alloy sheets. With the further improvement of the magnesium alloy forming process technology, the newly developed magnesium alloy structural parts will use high-performance magnesium alloys (such as wrought magnesium alloys, etc.), magnesium. The application potential of alloys in automobiles will be further expanded. For example, we have developed AZ61A and ZK61M magnesium alloy sheets with a thickness of less than 1mm. After treatment, the tensile strength can reach 330Mpa and 370Mpa respectively. It can replace the roof, door, hood, trunk, bumper and front seat. The application of magnesium alloys in the automotive, metal control box and pedal brackets will further expand the application potential of magnesium alloys in automobiles.
